Abstract
Primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma is a very rare disease. The first impression give by most of the caxes is similar to that of acute appendicitis or periappendiceal abscess. Furthermor, appendiceal cancers are generally diagnosed after a
histopathological examination is performed. About 0.2~0.5% of all GI tract malignancies are attributed to appendiceal adenocarcinoma. Upon review of the literature on this subject, about 500 cases of appendiceal cancer were reported worldwide
since
Beger's case report in 1882. Twenty-two cases of appendiceal cancer have been reported in Korea. Generally, a right hemicolectomy is performed as the treatment. 5-FU chemotherapy can be effective in limited cases. But, radiation therapy is a
useless
modality. 18~36% of the patients receiving a right hemicolectomy for appendiceal cancer can expect a 5 year extended life expectancy.
This auther's case, was 56 years old male the chief complaints were RLQ abdominal pain after onset of a fever, chills and common cold-like symtpms experienced since a month before admission. We performed emergency appendectomy under the
impression
of
acute appendicitis or periappendiceal abscess. After histopathologic examination, however primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma was confirmed. An elective right hemicolectomy was performed. And 4 cycle chemotherapies were administered. Therefore,
the
authors report a case of primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma with review of the literatures of precedent case.
